The group possessed several biplanes. Zheng's pirates came into conflict with Bumi and Meelo when they visited the island to explore an old Air Nomad hermitage.[1]

History

At some point after Avatar Aang's death in 153 AG, Zheng and her pirate group seized control of a remote island where an Air Nun, Master Wangmo, had built a hermitage ages ago. The pirates eventually aquired a number of biplanes, using them to patrol the sky around the island and forcing any passer-bys to hand over all their valuables. The pirates also declared one side of the island "forbidden", forcing any outsider to additionally "grovel at [Zheng's] feet" for the offense of trespassing.

The pirates were defeated by Meelo.

Around 174 AG, Bumi and Meelo visited the island on Lefty, hoping to find Master Wangmo's old home. However, they were intercepted by two biplanes of Zheng's pirates. One pirate promptly used a megaphone to warn them that they were trespassers and ordered them to surrender as well as hand over their valuables. When the two airbenders refused to comply, the pirates used lassos to catch the intruders. They quickly caught Bumi, but Meelo kicked one pirate off their plane and then blinded its pilot, forcing it to land. He then surprised the other biplane as it attempted to fly away with Bumi. After a short scuffle, Meelo freed Bumi, whereupon the two airbenders fell into the forest below. One frustrated pirate screamed after them that Zheng would hear of this incident.[1]

Trivia

  • The author of "Cat-Owl's Cradle", Alexandria Monik, stated that when developing Zheng's pirates, she was given the instruction to design them like "Mad Max, but make it Avatar".[2]
    • The reverence shown by the pirates toward their leader, "Queen" Zheng, shares some resemblance to the relationship between Immortan Joe and his followers in Mad Max: Fury Road.
