History

The school produced a series of successful firebenders in the late era of Szeto. One group of students from Sunray Academy formed Team Flame Throwers and went on to win the Nationwide Bending Competition. Members of the team were tutored by Sifu Chuan, the school's firebending teacher.[2][1]

A few years later, the school was due to host the Regional Bending Tournament. Chuan noticed that the school was missing a fifth-grade team that year, and promised to personally tutor any students of the appropriate age range if they signed up, causing Adaki to volunteer himself and his friends Jiyung, Aera, and Sujun.[1] As she trained her new pupils, Chuan set various challenges to identify how the group could overcome their weaknesses and tap into their strengths. Her methods were mocked by Team Undefeated, a group of older students who also planned to enter the tournament.[3]

The tournament was moved up by a week to line it up with the school's visit by Kazu Mori, an adviser to Fire Lord Yosor.[4] The event came down to Team Adaki and Team Undefeated, both from Sunray Academy.[5] Although Team Undefeated were older, it suffered various setbacks from its lack of coordination in the face of Team Adaki's unity, as well as sabotaging themselves due to personal grievances. Only Tearan was left from Team Undefeated, and Adaki and his friends tried to win the match automatically by burning the small length of rope holding a lantern above the stage, and catching the lantern while it was still intact. Tearan tried to claim the lantern for himself, but his opponents threw various distractions at him. Adaki launched himself off Tearan's back to catch the lantern and win the match. Team Adaki therefore took the regional title, choosing to rename themselves Team Matchsticks.[6]

Curriculum

The school teaches a wide range of subjects, including meditation, math, and firebending. During the era of Szeto, some teachers were strict, but others like Chuan were particularly empathetic and encouraging. The school fostered a sense of loyalty in the nation, but this was far less politically extreme than the completely uncompromising worldview promoted in students during the Hundred Year War. Teachers also encouraged students to be aware of honor and reputation, and to make sure to never disgrace themselves, their families, or the school. Fire Avatars like Szeto were deeply respected as both national heroes and great benders.[7]
