Sakuru was a Guiding Wind revolutionary and waterbender who previously lived as a merchant captain. He played a major role in a crisis on Jasmine Island in the 50s BG, when he and Fengying discovered the conspiracy of Magistrate Emerald.

History

Merchant career and joining the Guiding Wind

Born in the Northern Water Tribe, Sakuru was initially a very successful and respected merchant captain. He travelled across the world on his ship, visiting many different locations and peoples. Over time, he became increasingly concerned over the great disparities of wealth and power which he encountered everywhere, often accompanied by the elites exploiting the lower classes.[1][2] Even when he visited the small, independent Jasmine Island with its egalitarian culture, Sakuru recognized that those involved in the island's tea trade were in a better position than the common workers.[1]

At one point, Fengying met and befriended a Jasmine Islander named Tsenten who had already forged good relations with Khandro, the leader of the Guiding Wind movement.[3] Upon learning of the Guiding Wind's views, he quickly adopted the movement's anti-aristocratic principles.[1] After fully joining the group, he devoted his longship to its cause.[1][4]

Intervening on Jasmine Island

In the 50s BG, Tsenten - by then a member of the Jasmine Island Council - asked for the Guiding Wind's aid. The councilman suspected that the local Earth Kingdom civilian representative, Magistrate Emerald, was engaged in illegal operations. His friends Sakuru and Fengying eagerly responded to the request.[2][3] Both regarded Emerald as the kind of pro-monarchy figure who they had sworn to oppose.[3]

Upon arriving on Jasmine Island, the two Guiding Wind members managed to infiltrate the local Earth Kingdom outpost, where they discovered evidence not just about corruption but a creeping coup covertly led by Emerald.[2] The two discovered that Emerald was also bribing or blackmailing two other members of the Jasmine Island Council, namely Xi Chin and Fu Hong.[5] Before Sakuru and Fengying could escape, the two were caught by the magistrate's guards. Having no intention to allow the revolutionaries to go free with the knowledge of his activities, Emerald subsequently declared them criminals and argued that they should be brought before a court in the Earth Kingdom; thus, he would win time and minimize the chances of a fair trial.[2] Meanwhile, Emerald threw Sakuru and Fengying into a prison located under the Earth Kingdom outpost, allocating them to the "toughest" cells specifically outfitted to prevent their escape. Sakuru's cell was extremely dry and kept dehydrated to prevent him from waterbending. Despite their harsh imprisonment, they were treated with respect by Buo Ren, the head of the local Earth Kingdom Army garrison.[5]

Yet as news of the arrest spread, Guiding Wind leader Khandro and Zeisan traveled to Jasmine Island to free Sakuru and Fengying. While Khandro tried to find a diplomatic resolution to the dispute, Zeisan secretly allied herself with the Jasmine Island protectors, an organization which also opposed Emerald.[2][3] She asked five protectors to break into the Earth Kingdom outpost to rescue Sakuru and Fengying.[3][6] This group consisted of Sukaya, Ukiuk, Qi Wei, Pushi, and Baljin.[6] Ultimately, the protectors and Guiding Wind members foiled Emerald's plans and secured Jasmine Island's independence.[7]

Personality

Sakuru felt devoted to social justice and freedom. He thus sought to overthrow the rule of corrupt nobles and their representatives wherever possible.[1][3]

Abilities

Sakuru was regarded as a fairly powerful waterbender[5] who was skilled in precision attacks against weakpoints.[1]
