For much of history, the Qi were the family mainly responsible for growing the unique golden jasmine flowers that were widely used on the island, most notably as ingredient for the famous jasmine tea.[1]
History
The Qi family descended from an early wave of Water Tribe migrants who settled on Jasmine Island in ancient times, intermixing with earlier and later groups of settlers. Over time, the family took charge of the cultivation of golden jasmine flowers, a unique plant native to the island. As they gradually established a near-monopoly on this subject, the Qi farmers became a major power as the flowers were used for many different processes including production of tea, the most important export item for the islanders. The Qi family shared its status with the Jin family, which tended to the local tea plants, and the Fu family, which dried and cut the other plants to produce brewed teas.[1][2] Members of the Qi family and the two other important clans were traditionally more wealthy than other islanders, though the overall wealth disparity on the island was quite small for much of history.[2] The three clans also established the "Three Families Festival" to return some of their wealth to the rest of the islanders.[3]
In the early era of Avatar Kyoshi, the Qi family was led by Qi Kiala, who also held a seat on the governing council.[4] One of the most important events of this time was a major Fifth Nation pirate raid in the late 290s BG. During this raid, Qi Kiala sought to protect the islanders' lives at all costs and, to a lesser degree, defend her clan's jasmine plant groves.[4][5]
Over the next centuries, the power of the three great families started to decline, though they were still powerful.[6] By the 50s BG, Jasmine Island became subject to substantial changes. A member of the Qi family, Qi Togu, was responsible for one of these changes as he offered the island's ruling council money to buy some land. As the land on the island had been traditionally been communal property, this proposal caused shock and even outrage among several islanders, most notably Fu Iroha, triggering a public dispute.[3] Around this time, clan member Qi Wei was one of the few remaining Jasmine Island protectors and helped to end Magistrate Emerald's conspiracy to annex Jasmine Island into the Earth Kingdom.[7][8]
As a result of the reforms, changes, and growing international links after the Hundred Year War, the importance of the three great families further declined on Jasmine Island, although their members were still generally wealthy.[9] In the 170s AG, an ex-Earth Empire officer named Pushi kidnapped Hanta, the son of Noodin Qi; in this way, the ex-soldier blackmailed the Qi family into selling the rights of the local jasmine cultivation groves. Though Noodin did not contact security forces out of fears for his son, a group of adventurers intervened to aid him and the clan.[10] After the island-wide disaster caused by K-N Mining, Qi family member and councilmember Qi Xao advocated a return to the previous status quo through a rebuilding effort.[11][12]
