Overview
While camping in the Earth Kingdom, Katara comes across a small village under attack by the Fire Nation. Two soldiers have a girl, Chio, and her father, Zenko, demanding they give them money. Katara defeats the soldiers and puts out the fire in the village. As thanks for saving them, Zenko invites Katara, Aang, and Sokka to their home for dinner, where Chio shows the group her origami creations.
Synopsis
While gathering berries from a bush near a river with Momo, Katara hears a cry for help and rushes to their aid, discovering Fire Nation soldiers setting wooden houses alight in Maizu Village. Two soldiers are harassing a girl, Chio, and one of her fathers, Zenko. They demand money from Zenko, but when Chio tells them they have none, the soldiers declare that Zenko will have to work for them instead.

Katara demands the soldiers to let them go, quickly defeating the soldiers and extinguishing the fire in the village with her waterbending. A perplexed Aang and Sokka, carrying bowls of berries and fish respectively, arrive at the village and, taking in the damage, ask if they missed anything, though Katara nonchalantly responds that they have not.
Zenko enthusiastically runs up to Katara, Chio in tow, to thank her and introduce himself and his daughter. He explains that the Fire Nation raided their village months prior, rounding up all their earthbenders, leaving them unprotected. Labeling Katara to have been the answer to their prayers, he invites Team Avatar to have dinner with his family to show their gratitude, despite not having much to offer. Katara accepts the invitation, much to the delight of Aang, Sokka, and Momo.
While enjoying casual conversation over dinner that night, Zenko's husband thanks Katara again for having saved his husband and bringing the Avatar to their town, as it renewed their hope to save their lands from the Fire Lord. Zenko notes that Chio does some bending of her own, much to her embarrassment. Katara is surprised by that revelation, as she had been under the impression that all earthbenders had been captured. Chio explains that her father was joking, as she is not a real bender but merely skilled in "paper-bending" origami, quickly folding a flower with a sheet of paper. Aang and Katara are impressed, while Sokka continues to eat, and Zenko's husband tells his daughter to show them her room. Chio is unconfident and says that heroes surely have better things to do, but Aang and Katara are quick to tell her they would love to see more. Still unsure of herself, Chio reluctantly agrees and leads the way, and Katara drags a surprised Sokka away from the table to Chio's room.

Embarrassed, Chio shows her room, which contains a large collection of origami of all sizes and shapes, hanging from the ceiling and sitting on the furniture, but labels it as not being impressive. Thoroughly impressed, Aang and Katara claim the collection to be the exact opposite, and while Sokka and Aang explore the room, Katara adds that it is nice to have a night off from saving the world from time to time. A demure Chio cannot accept the praise, telling Katara she knows they are just saying those nice things to be polite, as they have done so much for the world as opposed to being forced to just wait and hope things will get better. Katara says that she too has to have hope and be optimistic all of the time, no matter how hard it is sometimes, as Aang and the people they meet depend on it. Concluding that a war cannot be won with fighting alone and that hope is more powerful than Chio realizes, she admits that she wishes she had more of it sometimes.
Upon saying goodbye, Chio's parents wish Team Avatar a safe journey and gives them a basket of dumplings. As Katara thanks them for their generosity, Chio timidly tells the waterbender that she initially wanted to be able to fight like her to protect her parents and the village, but she now knows that it is not the only way she can help people. She reveals an origami crane, folded with a blue and white paper that sports little waves, and gives it to Katara, explaining that since the crane is a symbol of luck and peace and Katara works to achieve peace, she hopes the crane will give her protection, luck, and especially hope. Katara gratefully embraces Chio and tells the girl that her "bending" can really help save the world. Team Avatar departs on Appa, waving farewell to Chio's family.
