It became home to pirates and outlaws during the Hundred Year War, as dishonorably discharged Fire Navy officers formed the Crimson Sails Armada and settled on the remote island.

History

As a remote island, Crimson Sails was settled by pirates of the Crimson Sails Armada. The armada formed during the reign of Fire Lord Azulon, when dishonorably discharged naval officers banded together, taking pride in raiding and stealing from the Fire Navy. By the time Fire Lord Ozai took the throne, they were a considerable threat. Subsequently, the new Fire Lord cut a deal with the pirates, with the Crimson Sails Armada agreeing to stop attacking the Fire Nation in exchange for food, money, and supplies.

With the pirates settling on the island long term, it came to be known as Crimson Sails, in part because ships too damaged to be repaired or to set sail again were thatched and tied to the island, with their red sails fluttering in the wind. Crimson Sails grew into a strangely bustling community, especially as the downtrodden people of other nations immigrated to the pirate paradise aboard Crimson Sails Armada vessels.

However, the end of the Hundred Year War meant that the captains of the island were in a strange place. Fire Lord Zuko was unaware of his father's deal with the pirates, and would soon drastically cut his military and pay reparations to the Earth Kingdom in accordance with the Treaty of Yu Dao. This meant that the money and supplies once quietly diverted to Crimson Sails dried up. When the island's leader, High Captain Kangana, went to Zuko to demand the deal be renewed, she came back empty-handed. Claiming that Kangana's poor leadership led to the deal coming to its end, Ningka was allowed to oust Kangana from her position and exile her from the island after the pirates voted her out.

Under Ningka's leadership, the Crimson Sails Armada reverted to piracy, attacking merchant and civilian vessels alongside those belonging to the Fire Navy.[1] The armada eventually attacked Zeisan's Hope, a vessel carrying money and supplies to the Earth Kingdom as part of the Treaty of Yu Dao, bringing the supplies to Captain's Isle at the very center of the island.[2] With the loss of cargo threatening an international incident and Zuko's military too spread thin to directly attack the pirates, he sent Xi, He Xing, Kahola, Honu, and Bin to infiltrate the island and find the stolen goods for the Fire Nation.[1]

Layout and description

Crimson Sails is located in waters between the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom.[1] Shortly after the end of the Hundred Year War, the island was composed of ships permanently moored and thatched together around a small central island. Many of the outer ships, including the Pyre Howler, the Renegade Phoenix, and the Burning Wave were only docked at the island and could sail away at a moment's notice.

Gangways, rope bridges, and floating platforms connected all the ships of the island with one another, and it was easy for someone to get lost in the mess if they did not know where they were going.[2]

Captain's Isle

The very center of Crimson Sails is home to Captain's Isle, a small island with a lagoon next to a cave wreathed in jungle flora. Inside the cave was a round table, crates filled with plunder, and various forms of seating. The round table was stabbed with the daggers of all the pirate captains who made their home on Crimson Sails. Ningka held important meetings with the other captains of the island on the isle, making general rulings on cases brought to her attention. It was also used for voting on larger and thornier issues that Ningka was willing to open to a vote.[2]

The Barge

The Barge was located to the west of the island and was nothing more than a giant floating wooden structure with an eatery on it. The creaking wood deck was not much to behold, as it held a mess of rickety tables and chairs. However, day or night, at least three boats of the Dancing Nobleman Fleet were docked at the Barge. The fleet used the Barge as a homebase of sorts, ensuing thee was good food and music at all times of the day. Captain Mosi was usually found at the Barge most nights with his husband Sayako and their daughter Lilly, enjoying whatever delicious meal the cook whipped together.[2]
