Xuan was a health worker who operated as a Silver Fangs revolutionary in Ba Sing Se during the late Hundred Year War.
History
Early life
Xuan was born into a middle-class family[5][6] of medical professionals in Ba Sing Se[7][8] around 84 AG.[nb 1] Both of his parents worked in the health sector.[7][8] His mother Jan was a doctor who ran the Hu Yuan Apothecary of the Middle Ring, with the building also acting as the family home. He had two older sisters, Aisha and Layla,[6][11] who often forced him to play dress-up with them in his early youth.[12] Overall, the family had a harmonious relationship.[12][11]
As his mother was a member of the Silver Fangs network,[13] Xuan also came to know some of the network's associates such as Tangbo. Growing up, he often visited Tangbo's shop and the older man entertained him with his carvings. Xuan began to call the carver "uncle", while he was dubbed "Little Xuan" in turn.[4][14]
Eventually, Xuan's father embarked on a journey to the herbalist's institute in Taku, as the institute's greenhouse offered a potential cure to a special fever which had become widespread among western refugees in Ba Sing Se. Before leaving, their father told Xuan, Aisha, and Layla to look out for each other. The medic never returned, as his caravan was attacked by the Fire Nation military and he was killed. Xuan deeply grieved for his father.[8] The older man's demise was one of the events which inspired Xuan to become involved in the Silver Fangs, as he wanted to make Ba Sing Se a safer place for his family and others.[7][8]
As he got older, Xuan began helping out at the Hu Yuan Apothecary and acquired some medical skills as he assisted in the family business.[15][6][11] Yet unlike his sister Layla, who was fully committed to take over the apothecary,[7] Xuan did not set out to become a full-fledged health worker. Instead, he attended a literature academy and expanded his involvement in the Silver Fangs.[7][8] He hoped to eventually attend Ba Sing Se University.[5] At his school, he befriended two other students, Rende and Jiang.[5][9]
Meeting Jin
Like many other students, Xuan was surprised when a refugee girl, Jin, won their literature academy's new year scroll contest due to her calligraphy skills. Though the other students were largely resentful of Jin's surprise victory, Xuan found her intriguing.[16]
Some time later in spring 100 AG, Xuan was once again helping out at the Hu Yuan Apothecary when Jin arrived as a customer, wanting to take a regular medicine order for her grandfather Gong-gong. He treated her as a regular customer until Jin realized that she had lost her money, meaning that she could not pay for the order. Xuan initially appeared sympathetic to her desperate request to pay later, as her grandfather urgently needed the medicine, but they were interrupted by Xuan's friends Rende and Jiang who wanted to take him to a show. Noticing him in conversation with Jin, the two teased him over his lack of a girlfriend, causing him to snap. He angrily rejected Jin's request and took the medicine packet away from her, ordering her to leave the apothecary.[1] Before she could do so, however, Doctor Jan returned to the apothecary and quickly assessed the situation. Xuan was scolded by his mother over how he was treating a loyal customer, whereupon he personally apologized to Jin and handed over the packet.[15] Regardless, Jin felt humiliated by these events and developed a resentment toward Xuan, deeming him an upper-class snob.[1][15][9]
Over the next weeks, Xuan, Rende, and Jiang discussed the upcoming "Grand Showcase", an academic team competition at their school. They needed four people to enter the competition and also knew that calligraphy was their weak spot; Rende argued that they should ask Jin to join their team due to her writing skills. Still blaming himself for the poor encounter at the apothecary, Xuan argued that she would not want to help them, but Rende persisted. Sometime later, the three friends accidentally ran into Jin in their academy's corridors. Whereas Xuan was too embarrassed to initiate a conversation, Rende openly asked for her help. Jin refused, stating that she lacked the time for the competition.[5]
Interpreting this as sign of her arrogance, Jiang promptly began to berate and insult her despite Xuan's pleadings to stop. He and Rende eventually intervened in an attempt to deescalate, though Jin interpreted this a mere attempt to help their friend. Furious over the insults, Jin tried to earthbend a stone at Jiang, but Xuan used his own bending to covertly stop and deflect the small projectile. Without Jiang noticing, Xuan gave a warning sign to Jin, urging her to leave. He knew that Jiang could ruin the refugee girl's life if she struck him, as his father worked at the infamous Ministry of Culture. Full of resentment, the girl quickly left.[5] Regardless, Xuan and Rende were left shocked and angry at Jiang's classist views;[9] the trio subsequently began to break apart.[9][17]
On the next day, Xuan sought out Jin at the school, apologizing for Jiang's behavior. He explained his attempt to protect her from further harm and reluctantly asked her to reconsider her refusal to join the competition. Xuan clarified that he and Rende would still be happy to work with her; they could just replace Jiang with someone else. She responded that he too had insultingly treated her at the Hu Yuan Apothecary, and conditioned her assistance on the payment of a large sum of money. Xuan initially thought that she was joking, before Jin angrily explained that she needed this money to help someone important to her. Realizing that something terrible had happened in the girl's life, Xuan began apologizing. Yet Jin was emotionally distraught over her own outburst and fled; he did not try to stop her.[9]
Physical description
Xuan had dark brown eyes and black hair which he wore with a top-knot. His eyebrows were thick and slanted downward toward his nose, and his cheekbones were high.[1]
