"I know what I want to name our baby now. Hope."
"That's a perfect name. Hope. "
Hope was the daughter of Than and Ying, born shortly after the refugee family made it across the Serpent's Pass with the help of Team Avatar.
History
Ying was still pregnant with Hope when their village was invaded by the Rough Rhinos, forcing the family to flee to Ba Sing Se.[2] Hope was born just outside the Outer Wall of the city, with Katara providing pivotal assistance.
When Hope was born, the love and togetherness exhibited by her parents inspired Aang to feel hopeful again, as he had succumbed to his feelings of anger and sadness over losing Appa.[3] It was for this reason that Ying named her daughter Hope.[1]
Hope and her parents successfully made it to Ba Sing Se, but the Fire Nation proceeded to capture the city shortly thereafter. Hope cried in her mother's arms as Fire Nation soldiers marched through the city.[4]

Trivia
- Hope was originally going to be named "Xi Wang" (希望
(xī wàng)), meaning "hope" in Chinese.[5] The creators clarified in the DVD commentary for "The Serpents Pass" that the decision to ultimately use the English version was meant to help viewers not familiar with Chinese to understand the name's meaning. They also mentioned that the baby was originally meant to be a boy.[6] - Hope is the second newborn to appear onscreen, the first being Yue and the third Aang. Among them, she is the only one seen in the present rather than a flashback.
