Yuming was a politician and elected member of Jasmine Island's governing council during the late Hundred Year War. Despite her popularity among the electorate, she was neither eager nor confident to serve in this position. However, she was brought into the spotlight when the Fire Nation launched a surprise attack on Jasmine Island despite its official neutrality in the early 90s AG, killing the other council members and leaving Yuming as the highest-ranking civilian authority for the small state. In this crisis, Yuming displayed considerable leadership talent, helping to resist the Fire Nation campaign and later steering Jasmine Island through the difficult rebuilding effort. She ultimately remained on her post far beyond a regular council tenure as new elections were impossible to organize for years, only stepping down in the late 100s AG.

History

Early life

Born on Jasmine Island, Yuming entered politics more by accident than by design. Her grandmother was an elected member of the island's council, but became increasingly frail in her elder eyes. Yuming thus began accompanying her grandmother on official tasks such as council meetings, caring for her and supporting her political actions. In the process, she became an increasingly prominent figure, often being quite vocal during council meetings despite her informal role.[1]

When her grandmother passed away, the electorate regarded Yuming as the ideal successor to her seat on the council due to her having already displayed an aptitude for the role. This surprised her, as she had not intended to become a leading politician.[1][3] Thus, her initial tenure on the council was marked by her insecurity, though she also became concerned over Jasmine Island's political isolation amid the raging Hundred Year War.[1]

"The Devastation"

Yuming was forced to deal with "The Devastation" during her tenure as council member.

In the early 90s AG, Jasmine Island was targeted by a surprise Fire Nation attack later dubbed "The Devastation". As part of the initial operation, Captain Zhao led an elite team of firebenders to target and kill the island's leadership. In the middle of the night, the team sneaked into the main settlement and exploded the monument which was located next to the council chamber; the rubble destroyed the chamber and the nearby homes of the council members. Yuming's two colleagues were instantly killed, but she and her young son Caishen survived. Afterward, the local protectors rallied under one of the remaining veteran warriors, Akataa, resisting the attackers and rescuing Yuming and Caishen.[4]

After Akataa's team, including Aiko, Basalt, Siku, and Fu Meili,[5] had brought Yuming to safety, she stepped into a true leadership position and started to organize emergency responses to the crisis.[6] In particular, she closely worked with Prince Lu Ten, an unexpected ally to the islanders who revealed that the invasion was seemingly carried out by Admiral Yueya under false pretenses.[6][7] Ultimately, the Jasmine Islanders and Lu Ten's forces managed to halt Yueya's destructive campaign.[8]

Rebuilding efforts

Under Yuming's leadership, Jasmine Island was gradually rebuilt until it regained its former prosperity.

After "The Devastation", new elections for the Jasmine Island Council were impossible due to the heavy damage to the local communities and the resulting focus on sheer survival. As a result, Yuming remained in her position far beyond the regular tenure of a council member, alongside two replacement colleagues.[9] For years, the islanders worked hard to restore their settlements, fields, and infrastructure, while continuing to struggle with further issues such as the arrival of foreign refugees seeking aid.[8][10]

Overall, the council oversaw successful rebuilding efforts and the restoration of the island's prosperity. Yuming finally stepped down as a council member in the late 100s AG, making way for new elections.[9]

Personality

Yuming loved Jasmine Island and sought to protect its people. This deep devotion had helped her when assisting her grandmother's work, but it also fueled her insecurity once she had assumed an official position, as she was unsure whether she was truly the right person to govern. Her confidence began to grow amid the chaos of "The Devastation". She was also a generous individual.[1]

Abilities

Yuming was a compentent leader as well as a decent waterbender.[1][2]
