Avatar Studios is a production company launched by Nickelodeon and Paramount Global on February 24, 2021, with Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino serving as co-chief creative officers.[1] The studio will produce brand-new material set in the Avatar universe, including new series, short-form content, spin-offs, and theatrical films;[2][3] the creators have stated they believe the studio gives them the freedom and support to make any potential Avatar project they can think of.[4]
History
In 2018, Netflix announced that a live-action remake of the original animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender was to start production in 2019.[5] Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were initially announced to be the executive producers and showrunners.[6][7] In June 2020, the creators departed the series due to creative differences.[8] That same year, Nickelodeon licensed the original The Last Airbender as well as The Legend of Korra to Netflix, which led to a boom in popularity for both series. This success convinced Nickelodeon to rekindle their relationship with Konietzko and DiMartino and explore further opportunities.[9][10]
In February 2021, ViacomCBS announced during its annual Investor Day the formation of Avatar Studios, a new division of Nickelodeon dedicated to the creation of projects based on animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The series creators and executive producers Konietzko and DiMartino would serve as co-chief creative officers. It was also announced that the first project of the studio would be an animated theatrical film that would begin production later in 2021.[11][12] Original series executive producer Eric Coleman takes executive producer credit, with Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, Latifa Ouaou, and Maryann Garger as the film's producers.[13][14][15]
Projects
According to DiMartino and Konietzko, they have a multi-tiered plan for the future of the Avatar series. The projects will expand upon the largely unexplored past, as well as the future of the world of Avatar. Each project will "feel like Avatar", but will have its own unique tone and look.[4] They have also stated that there is no plan to work on adaptations of Avatar comics or books.[16] Avatar Studios content will be expanding on ancillary book canon.[16]
Currently, Avatar Studios is working on four new television series and three new animated theatrical films.[17][18][19] The three films will be made in an original hybrid 2D and computer-generated (CG) style, and in collaboration with Flying Bark Productions.[20][21] DiMartino and Konietzko have looked into hybrid styles of 2D-3D, although this idea was discarded, as well as pure 3D animation.[16] It was reported that concept art for the first film was shown at the Annecy International Film Animation Festival, showing a shot of a walled city with a giant tower (later clarified to resemble General Fong's fortress) with the caption "The Avatar Returns" and the elemental symbol for earth.[22][23]
At the same time, Avatar Studios helped to create new canon material for the Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game,[24] Chronicles of the Avatar novels, Avatar Legends novels, comics,[25] and Avatar: The Last Airbender Cookbook: Official Recipes from the Four Nations.[26] Multiple video games are also in development.[16]
The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender
The first project from Avatar Studios will be The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender,[27] a movie focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends[19][28] in their young adulthood,[29] under the working title "Aang: The Last Airbender".[30] Directed by Lauren Montgomery and produced in collaboration with Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation, the film was set to start production in late 2021[3] for release on October 10, 2025,[31] but this was later pushed back to October 9, 2026.[32]
In late 2023, Jessica Matten was confirmed to have been cast as Katara in the film via the official website of her production company 7 Forward Entertainment.[33] At CinemaCon in April 2024, Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, and RomΓ‘n Zaragoza were revealed to be part of the voice cast for the film.[30] Eric Nam later confirmed that he would be the voice of Aang,[34] while the official Avatar: The Last Airbender Instagram account confirmed fan reports from the event that Dave Bautista had been cast as the villain and Dionne Quan had been cast as Toph.[35]
Avatar: Seven Havens
On February 20, 2025, the series Avatar: Seven Havens was announced by Avatar Studios. It is an upcoming television series set in the Avatar universe as a sequel to The Legend of Korra. The series, which will be helmed by Avatar co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will run for two seasons of thirteen episodes each.[36][37]
