History

A wolfbat attacked Team Avatar as they traveled through the Cave of Two Lovers. Sokka attempted to swat it away with a torch, only for the torch to be knocked out of his hand and land near Appa, subsequently scaring the flying bison and causing the wolfbat to flee. Shortly afterward, a group of wolfbats fled from two badgermoles passing by Sokka and the traveling nomads.[2]

Anatomy

The wolfbat is the size of a wolf and generally resembles the canine, except for its bat-like wings and face. It is brown in coloration, quadrupedal, and possesses a set of webbed wings that it uses to fly. It has sharp, pointed teeth and a snout that resembles that of a hog's.[2][3]

Behavior

A wolfbat on the ground.

Territorial by nature, wolfbats only leave their normal habitat at night.[1] On the day, they sleep upside-down in caves.[3] They tend to congregate in large groups which provides them with safety.[2][3] However, the wolfbat does not build nests.[4] Wolfbats sometimes howl at the moon.[5]

Their only predator is the gigantic badgermole.[2][3] Wolfbats are so frightened by badgermoles that they easily panic at potential signs of the massive creatures' presence, often mistaking human actions as such signs. When frightened, wolfbats often frantically seek to escape in large swarms which can appear threatening to those who are ill-informed on the animals.[3]

Though they can be ferocious predators[1] and many gruesome tales are told about them, wolfbats are actually fairly harmless to humans. As long as one does not surprise or frighten them, people can easily approach them and stay in their proximity for extended times.[3] They only attack people when panicked.[2]

Connection

The wolfbat possesses attributes from both of its namesakes; its body shape and size, as well as its general temperament, resemble that of a wolf, whilst its wings and face are taken from a bat.
