Gantulga was the owner of a popular tea stand in Downtown Republic City's Tea Market. They were also an influential information broker and peddler of secrets.[1]
History
Gantulga inherited a stand in the Tea Market from their parents upon their retirement. Gantulga's stand became the most popular in the entire bazaar. It was centrally located, and served a variety of teas and herbal infusions from across the world. Gantulga's teas and snacks were excellent, and were much cheaper than many in the notoriously overpriced Tea Market.
The low prices came about possibly because Gantulga made most of their money through secrets. Gantulga genuinely loved gossip, but their loose-lipped persona was mostly a calculated veneer, as they were very careful and parsimonious about serious secrets that they picked up as an information broker. They helped out customers who wanted to leak information quietly, learn privileged data, or find out who was snitching on them, although not for cheap.
Gantulga did not worry much about external pressure, as they were always willing to sell equally to all parties, with their rates being fair for the information they shared. A tacit truce also left the Tea Market information brokers free from coercion by their customers, as if one individual threatened the information stream, the other customers could step in to protect their own interests. However, their stand was eventually threatened by the triads. Mobsters came to realize the sheer value of corporate secrets, and started turning their attention on the Tea Market. The crime syndicates started to grow more brazen, and were willing to act, in particular by isolating their targets.
The tea seller received ultimatums from the Creeping Crystal Triad, the Agni Kai Triad, and the Terra Triad, as well as the remnants of the Triple Threat Triad. Each of them asked Gantulga to join their organization, providing them exclusive access to secrets in exchange for protection. The situation risked a fight between the triads openly breaking out across the entire Tea Market. Gantulga could not go to the police over the situation, as their information brokering business was not a legal operation. They started searching for someone who could help them out of the situation intact.[1]
Personality
Gantulga genuinely loved gossip, and believed that it was the common folk's first line of defense against the rich and powerful. However, their demeanor was a veneer to cover for them being an information broker who dealt with serious secrets. They wanted to talk to anyone and everyone who seemed well-connected and important, and their intuition often led them to any and every person with something interesting to share, or who one day might provide something of use. Gantulga often chatted up customers while serving tea to them, hoping they would reveal something important.[1]
