The oasis is a balmy collection of wooden houses and outdoor squares centered around a natural lake.[1][2]
History
During the Hundred Year War, the Fire Nation was spread thin trying to conquer the most politically important places, so they tended to leave alone places like the So Bai Oasis. Inhabitants had only heard of the war for the most part, though they received a few refugees from other parts of the Earth Kingdom. It was popular wisdom of the place that "It's better to stay away from a conflict one cannot win." The Fire Nation was too powerful to oppose by way of arms, so intead the inhabitants of the little oasis in the middle of a war preferred survival as their form of resistance.[1]
The town only had one Earth Kingdom militia guard left, a woman named Molou who wanted to leave and get involved in the war, but she felt obligated to protect her home. The town's magistrate, Ba, was the de jure head of the town, but was actually quite content to do nothing.[2]
So Bai Oasis was on the planned route of a group employed by the Earth Kingdom government to escort General Onomu of the Fire Nation to Ba Sing Se.[3] The Rough Rhinos were aware of the route that Onomu was taken and were prepared to invade the village if they found that Onomu was present there, hoping to hunt her down and "deal" with her on behalf of Fire Lord Ozai.[2]
