Patron Wu, also known as the Singer, was the most renowned performer in Ba Sing Se during the late Hundred Year War. They were a founding member of the Silver Fangs, and as one of the group's two representatives, helped fight against the Dai Li conspiracy in Ba Sing Se.[1] Much like the Silver Fangs' other representative, Aunt Sumi, Patron Wu hinted at their ties to the Order of the White Lotus.[2]

History

Following a wave of new repressive measures in the Ba Sing Se,[3] Patron Wu helped to found the Silver Fangs, a business syndicate opposing the corrupt government and aiming to help the poorest in society.[1][4]

Jin, Smellerbee, and Longshot were first introduced to Patron Wu in Bamboo House after completing their mission to supposedly recover a stolen item from Pine House in the Middle Ring's entertainment district. Patron Wu accepted the fan they had retrieved, opening it with a flick of the wrist to reveal its blades and pointing it at Jin's throat.[1] They quickly snapped the fan shut, revealing it was only a replica of a Kyoshi Warrior war fan, and revealing their interest in a weapon that appeared to be decorative as well as dangerous.[5]

Jin asked about how Patron Wu's fan had been stolen and ended up in neighboring Pine House. Patron Wu laughed, and said that it must have been a ploy to test new initiates. They revealed that Lady Mei, who the group believed had stolen the fan from Patron Wu, was in fact a dear friend of theirs, and would not mind being trespassed upon to test the mettle of the Silver Fangs' recruits. Patron Wu assured the group that there would be no 'wanted' posters appearing over the city. A servant arrived with cups of tea, letting Patron Wu oversee the three swearing their oaths as full members of the Silver Fangs.[5]

Patron Wu later helped provide Xuan with Dai Li tokens so that he and Jin could get into the palace and save Susu.[6] After Jin and Xuan were arrested on the Day of Black Sun, Xuan suspected that Patron Wu may have been working with the Fire Nation, but later learned of the Silver Fangs' plans to strike only when the moment is right.[7]

When Jin started to spread the word of revolution out of Wen Bakery, Patron Wu recommended that pastries with secret messages inside should bear the mark of the White Lotus, stating that it would mean something to certain people who remembered the old ways.[2] During the liberation of Ba Sing Se, Jin assumed that Patron Wu and Aunt Sumi must have worked to convince reluctant Lower Ring gangs to join the uprising.[8]

Physical description

Patron Wu had artfully drawn brows. They formed an arc shape, and accented their eyes. They had a sharp beauty to them, with an elegant symmetry to their features. Their neck had a "swanlike" grace, and their movements were languid and lovely, like watching a sculpture come to life. Their voice was smooth and honeyed.[1] They wore heavy make-up, with noticeable red lips. Jin subconsciously felt like calling Patron Wu "Madame", but quickly realized it would be a blunder to do so after being met by their intense gaze. They were quite tall, Jin believing them to be almost the height of Avatar Kyoshi.[5]
