Ema was an orphan born in the Earth Kingdom and raised by the Air Nomads. He took to building his own devices to mimic airbending abilities, and was deeply grateful for all that had been given to him.[1]
History
Ema was adopted by the Air Nomads when his Earth Kingdom village was swallowed by a giant tsunami. As one of the only survivors with no family left, he was taken in by the Air Nomads of the Southern Air Temple and raised as one of their own.
The kindness of the Air Nomads taught Ema that even if one struggled in life, there was always hope, and he used that hope to develop a number of gliders that helped him compete with even the best airbenders. Ema had not left the temple since he was taken there as a toddler, and volunteered when the Southern Air Temple sent a group of Air Nomads to keep the peace at the Four Nations Summit & Technological Symposium at the request of Avatar Roku, including Bo, Chegu, Sherab, and Norbu. He wanted to see the world, and also perhaps to reconnect with his Earth Kingdom roots.[1][2] After meteorite crates were stolen from the Fire Nation, Taqukaq tasked the group with finding the thief before it was too late.[3]
Personality
Ema was a truly hopeful figure, even though some of those he faced off doubted him. He was very earnest and compassionate to others.[1]
Abilities
Although he lacked airbending abilities, Ema was able to engineer inventions that allowed him to mimic airbending to a certain extent. He also had several alchemical satchels that he could drop from his glider during a fight.[1]
