Jade was an opera singer and well-respected critic whose editorials had the power to make or break anyone in the scene of Republic City's Harmony Park district.

History

Jade sang in theaters across the world, though he performed mainly in Republic City for the last few decades of his career. He was an icon of the opera, renowned for his incredible vocal work, but he later retired. Jade felt bitter about this, as he felt that this was forced upon him by the slights of other critics who felt that his voice worsened with age.[1]

By the mid 170s AG, Jade had taken up a role publishing editorials and reviews in a column, which discussed all the newest performances, the newest theaters, and anything else that caught his fancy.[1][2] He had the power to make or break anyone in the scene of Harmony Park, the aesthetic heart of Republic City. A positive review from Jade was known to guarantee the rise of a new performer, while a scathing review condemns them to the background.[1] Jade's social power also extended to established business owners, as a bad word from him could mean a club going empty and a restaurant going belly up.[2]

While Jade did have a strong critical eye and the ability to recognize greatness, his resentment of the critiques about his own career led him to revel in his power as a critic. He therefore began to publish far more negative reviews than positive.

Jade's own money depleted rapidly over the years, and he ended up becoming penniless without the money he was making from performing. However, he had to still keep up with a flashy, incredible lifestyle in order to maintain his status. Da Yin, CEO of Yin Incorporated and owner of the Upper Ring Club, successfully controlled Jade through his debts, guaranteeing that Jade's positive words were saved for those chosen by Da Yin.[1] Jade eventually began to target the Sunset Social Club, an experimental bar run by two start-ups from the Fire Nation. The critic poured out acidic review after review about the club, claiming that it was not just cheap and campy, but also had numerous underworld ties that any self-respecting citizen would wince at. Thanks to Jade's campaign, the bar was set to close its doors within a month. However, Da Yin was pressuring Jade to destroy the establishment's reputation, as the ruthless businesswoman wanted to buy the club herself.

With no money to his name and Da Yin in financial control of his future, Jade had no choice but to write negative reviews. However, he felt terrible about what he was doing. He thought that the club was great and, from what he understood, the owners made it to Republic City all on their own. Jade knew what he was doing to them was terrible, but was unsure how he could stop it.[2]

Abilities

Jade had an excellent eye for good media. This helped him to have such a successful career as a performer and to become a well-respected critic.[2]
