History

At some point before 296 BG, the position of headmistress at the Royal Fire Academy was taken by Hei-Ran,[3] who killed her cousin, one of the other candidates for the position, in an Agni Kai.[7] During her time at the academy, Hei-Ran became infamous for holding the record for the most "accidental" kills during Agni Kai.[7] Years later, the school was attended by her daughter, Rangi,[7] and Koulin, a noblewoman from the Saowon clan. The two girls, who were in the same academic year, developed a rivalry, and Koulin began spreading vicious rumors about Rangi's mother.[8] Rangi's time at the academy was marred by her mother's reputation and the rumors surrounding her.[7][8]

During the Hundred Year War, the academy was overseen by headmistress Pearl. Throughout her tenure, she received honors from Fire Lords Sozin and Ozai as reminders to uphold the majesty of Fire Nation history. She held the position of headmistress for over three generations.[9] During Azulon's reign, Princess Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee attended the school as children, where they became close friends.[10]

After the Hundred Year War, the academy remained a prestigious school for the Fire Nation's elite. However, they also began to allow commoner girls to attend classes through reforms established by Fire Lord Zuko.[9] Among its students at the time was Kiyi, Zuko's half-sister. As the reform-oriented monarch suspected that the school's traditional structures might exert a negative influence on Kiyi, he appointed his close friend Mai as a local teacher to watch over her and introduced reforms to the Academy curriculum through the current headmistress, Shihan.[9]

During Shihan's time as headmistress, she was reluctant to change traditional methods instituted by Pearl and previous generations, in part because Pearl had taken her in and given her opportunities she otherwise would not have had. Eventually, Mai helped Shihan realize the problems associated with using Agni Kai to resolve student disputes, as well as the limitations of the school's historical instruction. Reflecting on the Agni Kai duels she had witnessed during her years at the academy, Shihan recognized these traditions as outdated and dangerous. She also questioned whether the Academy truly helped students become the best versions of themselves.[9]

After Shihan gained the confidence to challenge Pearl's legacy, Pearl ordered Dai Li agents loyal to Azula to kill her once she left the manor. Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee stopped the attack at the Academy, after which Shihan continued implementing her reforms.[9]

During the era of Korra, one of the Academy's alumni was Dalja Ro. During their time there, Dalja realized that they did not fully identify as a girl, and the support of their classmates helped shape who they became. Dalja later recruited many Academy graduates when they headed the Fire Nation Relief Fleet.[11]

The Academy is viewed as the best place to educate firebenders. It is common for nonbender girls of elite social class to go directly to the Fire Nation's most prestigious university instead of attending the Academy.[5] Nevertheless, bending ability is not required, and elite firebender girls sometimes choose alternate educational paths.[6][5]

Like other schools in the Fire Nation, the Academy maintains a strict schedule, and class cancellations are rare. One of the few exceptions is the ceremonial festival held after the identity of the Fire Avatar is revealed.[12] The school historically encouraged fierce competition among its students[1] and teachers,[7] sometimes resulting in rivalries that even led to deaths.[1] This reputation for strictness and cruelty was firmly established by the early 3rd century BG[8] and persisted into the 100s AG.[9]

The Academy works in close partnership with the Fire Army[13] and includes an officer's school.[8] Students study Fire Nation history, undergo survival training, and forage for food in the wild.[4] They are taught discipline, the art of war, and political strategy.[9] Coursework also includes weapon studies and analyzing architectural blueprints of buildings across the four nations to identify potential weak points in combat situations.[2]

Layout and facilities

The Academy's courtyard features a small grove, a pond, and a playground.

Perched on the highlands along the edge of Hari Bulkan, the Royal Fire Academy for Girls is built into the mountainside, its architecture partially embraced by volcanic cliffs. From this elevated vantage point, the academy commands a sweeping view of the capital city. The campus consists of two main buildings and a playground.[9]

Courtyard

Upon passing through the academy gates, visitors enter a vast courtyard. To the left is a calm pond shaded by nearby trees, with boulders and a lone stone bench along its bank. The area is also home to a thriving population of cicada beetles. On the opposite side stands a play structure equipped with rope ladders and climbing frames, offering an energetic retreat between classes.[9]

Arena

At the rear of the academy lies a large outdoor arena. Partially covered by inward-curving volcanic rock formations, the arena serves as the venue for Agni Kai duels used for student conflict resolution.[9]
