<header></header> </infobox> The world plays host to a vast variety of occupations and careers, most notably in the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation. Most occupations are directly associated with the fulfillment of civilian needs, along with the variables of one's social class and wealth. Certain institutions, such as the Ba Sing Se University, specialize in the training and preparation of citizens to handle and develop certain skills to be put to use in a more specialized profession.

Air Nomads

Sister Iio allowed young monks to choose their flying bison.

Based on what is known about the Air Nomad culture, there does not seem to be a large diversity of occupations offered. The only known careers that were pursued by the nomads include:

  • Administrator โ€” One who manages the finances and logistics at the air temple.[1]
  • Airbending instructor โ€” Teacher that tutors young airbenders in the mastery of their native bending art.
  • Flying bison trainer โ€” Caretaker of flying bison before they are adopted by young Air Nomad children.
  • Librarian โ€” Keeper and manager of an air temple's library.[2]
  • Member of the Council of Elders โ€” Leaders of the Air Nomads that manage the government system.[3]
  • Monk โ€” Male who dedicates his life to religious teachings.
  • Nun โ€” Female who dedicates her life to religious teachings.
  • Philosopher โ€” Someone who studies general and fundamental questions, such as those about existence, reason, knowledge, values, mind, and language.[4]
  • Secretary โ€” One who assists with correspondence, record-keeping, making appointments, and carrying out similar tasks.[5]
  • Spirit Seer โ€” A rare and archaic position among the Air Nomads, but honored and important.[6]

Water Tribe

Occupations pursued by the people of the Water Tribe seem to vary depending whether citizens reside in the Northern Water Tribe or Southern Water Tribe.

Southern Water Tribe

Traditionally, many occupations of Southern Water Tribe people focused mainly on the defense and survival in the South Pole region. In other periods, however, the tribe achieved considerable prosperity, allowing for more complex occupations:

  • Business magnate โ€” Leader of a large corporation.[7]
  • Carnival barker โ€” Responsible for running game booths during the Glacier Spirits Festival.
  • Cartographer โ€” One who draws or produces maps.[8]
  • Cook โ€” One who prepares food for tribe members.
  • Courier โ€” One who delivers correspondances.[9]
  • Fisherman โ€” Hunter that fishes for food.
  • Hunter โ€” One who pursues and kills animals for food.
  • Jerky seller โ€” One who sells blubbered seal jerky.[10]
  • Merchant โ€” One who deals with trade and commodities in order to produce profit.[11]
  • Midwife โ€” Assists in the process of childbirth.[12]
  • Prison guard โ€” One who supervises prisoners in a prison or jail.[13]
  • Restaurateur โ€” Proprietor of a restaurant.[10]
  • Seaweed expert โ€” One who specializes in documenting the many types of edible seaweed found in the Water Tribes.[14]
  • Talekeeper โ€” Traditional historian and storyteller.[15]
  • Tribal chief โ€” Leader of a Water Tribe settlement.[16]
  • Warrior โ€” One who protects and defends the tribe.
  • Washer โ€” One who washes clothes.
  • Waterbending instructor โ€” Teacher that tutors pupils in the mastery of waterbending.[10]

Northern Water Tribe

Northern Water Tribe warriors defended the capital during the Siege of the North.
  • Astronomer โ€” A scientist who studies the celestial bodies.
  • Architect โ€” Person who plans, designs, and participates in the construction of buildings.[10]
  • Bodyguard โ€” One who escorts and protects another person.[17]
  • Canal worker โ€” One who operates the canal leading in and out of city.
  • Chief's adviser โ€” Official who aids the Tribal Chief in making decisions.
  • Cook โ€” One who prepares food for tribe members.
  • Engineer โ€” One who operates and mends machinery.[10]
  • Fisherman โ€” Hunter that fishes for food.
  • Gondolier โ€” Boatman who propels a gondola.
  • Healer โ€” One who uses waterbending skills for healing purposes.[16]
  • Healing instructor โ€” One who teaches waterbenders how to properly employ their healing abilities.[16]
  • Hunter โ€” One who kills animals for food.
  • Merchant โ€” One who deals with trade and commodities in order to produce profit.
  • Merchant captain โ€” The commander of a trading ship.[18]
  • Musician โ€” One who plays a musical instrument for a living.
  • Royal servant โ€” Person who serves and fulfills the needs of the royal family.
  • Sage โ€” A wise person who is involved in the spiritual matters of the tribe.[19]
  • Seaweed expert โ€” One who specializes in documenting the many types of edible seaweed found in the Water Tribes.[14]
  • Tribal chief โ€” Leader of a Water Tribe settlement.[16]
  • Tribal Princess โ€” Daughter of the Tribal Chief.[16]
  • Warrior โ€” Fighter who protects and defends the tribe.
  • Waterbending instructor โ€” Teacher that tutors pupils in the mastery of waterbending.

Earth Kingdom

There are a wide range of occupations that are practiced and developed in the Earth Kingdom:

  • Accountant โ€” One who keeps, inspects, and analyzes financial accounts.[20]
  • Architect โ€” Person who plans, designs, and participates in the construction of buildings.[21]
  • Artist โ€” Creates, practices and demonstrates skill in different fields of art. Examples include painters, sculptors, dancers, actors, etc.
  • Assistant โ€” Person that assists another person in accomplishing his or her goals.
  • Astrologer โ€” Person who studies the positions of celestial bodies and related topics. They provide information about people.
  • Attendant of the Omashu delivery system โ€” One who manages earth boxes used for postal services within the city of Omashu.[22]
  • Bartender/Barman โ€” One who serves beverages behind a bar or tavern.[23]
  • Blacksmith โ€” One who shapes metal into armor, weapons, and tools for a living.
  • Bodyguard โ€” One who escorts and protects another person.[24]
  • Bounty hunter โ€” One who captures fugitives for a monetary reward.[25]

  • Canyon guide โ€” One who guides people across the Great Divide.[26]
  • Chamberlain โ€” An official charged with the management of the living quarters of a sovereign or member of the nobility.[27]
  • Circus performer โ€” Bending showpeople and acrobats who perform in a circus for a public.[28]
  • Cook โ€” One who prepares food for consumption.
  • Dai Li agent โ€” Originally, a protector of the cultural heritage of Ba Sing Se;[29] later, a corrupted elite police officer to serve the Grand Secretariat of Ba Sing Se[30][31] and the Earth Monarch.[32]
  • Daofei โ€” Organized outlaws and criminals who follow their own set of codes and traditions.[33]
  • Deliveryperson โ€” One who delivers products.[34]
  • Earth Sage โ€” Prominent figure who holds sway over the kingdom's spiritual affairs.[35]
  • Earth Monarch โ€” Political figure that governs the Earth Kingdom.[36]
  • Earth Rumble competitor โ€” Earthbending wrestler who fights for public entertainment.[37]
  • Earthbending instructor โ€” Teacher that tutors students in mastery of the art of earthbending.
  • Earth Rumble host โ€” One who promotes and hosts the championship.[37]
  • Entrepreneur โ€” Person who has possession of an enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome.
  • Farmer โ€” Cultivator of living organisms for food or raw materials.
  • Fisherman โ€” Hunter who gathers shellfish, or captures fish and other animals from a body of water.
  • Fortuneteller โ€” Person who predicts the future.[38]
  • General โ€” Military figure who directs the military forces of the Earth Kingdom.
  • Geographer โ€” One who studies geography, the Earth's physical environment and human habitat.
  • Member of Terra Team โ€” Soldier that protects Ba Sing Se.[39]
  • Government official โ€” Political figure that assists in the running of the government.[40]
  • Governor โ€” Political leader of an Earth Kingdom state, originally appointed by the Earth Monarch and from 174 AG democratically elected.[41]
  • Grand Secretariat of Ba Sing Se โ€” Political figure that leads the government of Ba Sing Se.[30]
  • Graphic designer โ€” Person dedicated to the graphic design and graphic arts industry.
  • Haiku master-member of the Five-Seven-Five Society โ€” One who passes the knowledge of haiku to the young women of Ba Sing Se.[42]
  • Head of the Dai Li โ€” Leader that directs the Dai Li.
  • Herbalist โ€” Person dedicated to the economic or medicinal uses of plants.[16]
  • Historian โ€” One who studies and writes about history.
  • Monarch of Omashu โ€” Political figure that governs the city of Omashu.[22]
  • Kyoshi Warrior โ€” Member of an elite that defends Kyoshi Island and the Earth Kingdom.[43]
The Kyoshi Warriors are the highly trained fighting force of Kyoshi Island.
  • Librarian โ€” Person who is a specialist in library work.
  • Machine builder โ€” Engineer who builds and repairs machines.
  • Masseur/Masseuse โ€” Person skilled in the art of massages. This can be studied at the Spa University.[42]
  • Mathematician โ€” Person who studies quantity, structure, space, change and related topics of pattern and form.
  • Mayor โ€” Leader of a city, town, or village.[40][41]
  • Mechanist-inventor-engineer โ€” One who develops economical and safe solutions to practical problems using science and technology.[44]
  • Member of the Council of Five โ€” One who directs the Military of the Earth Kingdom.[45]

  • Metalbending instructor โ€” Teacher that tutors students in mastery of the art of metalbending.
  • Miner โ€” Person who extracts minerals for the kingdom.

  • Monorail driver โ€” One who drives the monorail using earthbending.
  • Monorail ticket checker โ€” Attendant who stamps tickets for people boarding the Ba Sing Se Monorail.[39]

  • Ringmaster โ€” Person who directs a circus performance.[52]
  • Royal Earthbender Guard โ€” One who protects the Earth Monarch.
  • Royal messenger โ€” One who delivers messages to the Earth King.[45]
  • Royal servant โ€” Person who serves and fulfills the needs of the Earth King.
  • Scientist โ€” Acquires some types of knowledge based on a scientific method.
  • Secretary โ€” One who assists with correspondence, record-keeping, making appointments, and carrying out similar tasks.[27]
  • Spa attendant โ€” Someone who works at a spa like the Fancy Lady Day Spa.[42]
  • Student โ€” Person who learns about a specific theme and studies at a university or school.[42]
  • Supreme Bureaucratic Administrator โ€” Person who controls each and every bureaucratic aspect of the Earth Kingdom, possibly a defunct position after the liberation of Ba Sing Se.

  • Warrior โ€” Fighter that protects and defends the Earth Kingdom.
  • Zookeeper โ€” Manager who looks after the Ba Sing Se Zoo.[42]
  • Zoologist โ€” One who studies animals.

Fire Nation

Many different occupations are developed in the Fire Nation:

  • Actor โ€” One who performs in plays, such as The Boy in the Iceberg.[51]
  • Admiral โ€” Military figure who directs the naval forces of the Fire Nation.
  • Architect โ€” Person who plans and designs buildings. Participates in its construction.
  • Blacksmith โ€” Person who shapes metal into armor, weapons, and tools. A specialty of blacksmithing would be a swordsmith who specializes in the construction of swords, such as Master Piandao.
  • Bodyguard โ€” One who escorts and protects another person.[49]
  • Captain โ€” Military figure that serves under Commanders in the Fire Nation Navy, controls and directs a ship.
  • Circus acrobat โ€” Person who performs difficult feats of balance, agility, and motor coordination.[53]
  • Circus trainer โ€” Person who trains animals of a circus.[54]

  • Commander โ€” Military figure that serves under Admirals in the Fire Navy, controls and directs several ships/naval base etc.
  • Cook โ€” Person that prepares food for consumption.

  • Farmer โ€” Cultivator of living organisms for food or raw materials.
  • Ferryman โ€” One who maintains or attends a ferry.
  • Firebending instructor โ€” Teacher who instructs students in mastering the art of firebending.
  • Fire Lord โ€” Political leader that rules and governs the Fire Nation.
  • Fire Sage โ€” Leader of the Fire Nation and servant to the Avatar and the Fire Lord. Religious authority of the Fire Nation who keeps the nation's history.[56]
  • Fire-Fisherman โ€” Fishermen who use firebending to create a brightly lit fireball over water, its light attracting fish to the surface.[57]
  • Fisherman โ€” Hunter that gathers shellfish, or captures fish and other animals from a body of water.
  • Florist โ€” Person who sells and cultivates flowers.[58]
  • General โ€” Military figure that directs the military forces of the Fire Nation.
  • Graphic designer โ€” Person dedicated to the graphic design and graphic arts industry.
  • Great Sage โ€” Leader of the Fire Sages, crowns the next Fire Lord.[56]
  • Headmaster โ€” Leader of the Fire Nation school.[59]
  • Hitman โ€” Person hired to assassinate a specific target.[59]
  • Innkeeper โ€” One who owns or manages an inn or hotel.[60]
  • Lieutenant โ€” Military rank below Captain.
  • Magician โ€” Person who creates illusions of impossible or supernatural feats.[61]

  • Waiter - Person who goes to tables in a restaurant and asks people for their orders and also brings them their food. At Kwong's Cuisine, they also function as outfitters that dress people with fancy clothing.

Jasmine Island

Despite its small size, Jasmine Island is an independent state with a complex society with many different occupations:

  • Council member โ€” Elected politican who governs Jasmine Island alongside other members of the council.[85]

  • Farmer โ€” Cultivator of living organisms for food or raw materials.[86]

  • Magistrate โ€” Official who oversees special projects, such as preserving the island's arts and culture.[89]

  • Protector โ€” Member of the Jasmine Island protectors, the state's security forces.[85]
  • Tea scientist โ€” One who researchs new tea blends and production techniques.[90]

Four nations

A guru integrates himself with nature.

Occupations with neutral characteristics are diverse in the world:

  • Avatar โ€” The spirit of light and peace incarnated in human form and master of all four bending arts.[91] The Avatar keeps balance among the four nations of the world.
  • Guru โ€” Spiritual expert.[54]
  • Judge โ€” Official who presides over court proceedings.[41][92]
  • Member of the Order of the White Lotus โ€” Sharer of knowledge and philosophy.[23]
  • Nomad โ€” Member of a community of people who move from one place to another, rather than settling down in one location.
  • Pirate โ€” Person dedicated to robbery or criminal activities committed at sea[93] or rivers.[94]
  • Storyteller โ€” Earns his pay from wanderers in exchange for entertaining tales.[44] Likely travels to wherever nomads often pass.
