Yueya was an admiral in the Fire Nation Navy during the late Hundred Year War. In the early 90s AG, she was responsible for the brutal Fire Nation campaign against independent Jasmine Island, seeking to destroy its people due to a long-held grudge of her own family toward the islanders. Her rampage became known as "The Devastation" due to its impact on Jasmine Island, but was eventually stopped by the Jasmine Island protectors and Prince Lu Ten.

History

Early life and rise in the ranks

Yueya was born on one of the outer Fire Islands.[1] Her family was distantly descended from Erchtei, a pirate who had been disgraced during an attempt to conquer the small, independent state of Jasmine Island. Over centuries, Erchtei's descendants had continued to carry this shame with them, developing a deep loathing for their ancestry as well as Jasmine Island.[1][2][3]

Having joined the military of the Fire Nation during the Hundred Year War, Yueya firmly believed that her ancestry negatively impacted her career. Even though she eventually reached the rank of admiral, she concluded that she had to work much harder for this honor than other Fire Nation officers.[1][3] Vengeful and embittered, Yueya eventually realized that she could exploit her position to take revenge on the origin of her family's misfortune: Jasmine Island.[1][2][3] Around the early 90s AG, the admiral approached the Fire Nation high command, claiming that Jasmine Island presented a potential springboard for a direct attack on the Fire Islands by the Earth Kingdom or Water Tribes. Though the island had remained neutral during the Hundred Year War, Yueya outlined that the potential risks remained high, whereas an occupation could be achieved with minimal resources due to the island's small population. The high command regarded her arguments as convincing, and sanctioned an expedition. Yueya was provided with a battleship and two destroyers for her operation.[3]

Campaign against Jasmine Island

In truth, Yueya had not just lied to the high command about the island's strategic worth, but also about her own plans. The admiral had no intention at occupying Jasmine Island, instead wanting to raze it to the ground. She reasoned that she could claim to have found evidence for the islanders posing an unexpected risk, and then ask the high command to sanction her genocidal actions post-facto. To this end, she began to lie to her assigned soldiers, telling them that the Jasmine Islanders were a vital risk to the Fire Nation. Though many soldiers in the expedition believed her, others such as Captain Zhao agreed to follow her out of sheer opportunism. However, there was also a contingent led by Prince Lu Ten –serving as captain under Yueya– who doubted their superior's words.[3]

Under Yueya's command, Fire Nation troops ravaged Jasmine Island during "The Devastation".

When Yueya's forces arrived at Jasmine Island, the admiral ordered a nightly surprise attack spearheaded by elite troops under Zhao. This initial assault succeeded in murdering much of the island's leadership as well as sowing chaos by setting the main settlement on fire. More Fire Nation troops subsequently embarked, destroying the island's settlements and fields and battling the local security forces (dubbed "protectors"). However, not everything went as Yueya had planned. Lu Ten and his followers quickly realized that the admiral had really lied about the islanders posing a grave threat. They responded by switching sides and trying to stop their comrades from continuing the rampage. Lu Ten personally met the admiral to reason with her.[4]

Lu Ten's efforts resulted in a pause of fighting, but Yueya only feigned interest in a peaceful solution. She planned to steer her dreadnought into Jasmine Island's main harbor, claiming that she was willing to negotiate to lure the islanders within reach of her ship-bound artillery.[4][5] However, the admiral underestimated the islanders' resolve. A contingent of protectors, including Akataa, Aiko, Basalt, Siku, and Fu Meili,[6] managed to defeat her loyal guards, disable the dreadnought, and eventually bested her in a hard-fought battle.[4][7]

After her defeat, Yueya's lies to the Fire Nation high command and the unsanctioned nature of her actions were exposed, disgracing her. Zhao cleverly exploited her downfall to advance his own career, while Lu Ten promised to ensure Jasmine Island's future safety.[7]

Legacy

Even though Yueya had been stopped by the protectors and Lu Ten, her campaign had heavily damaged Jasmine Island and cost many lives. The islanders needed many years to recover from "The Devastation",[2] and continued to remember the admiral for her cruelty.[8]

Personality

Yueya was a deeply determined, aggressive, and self-loathing person. She disdained her own ancestry as well as hated Jasmine Island, viewing both as the causes of all miseries in her life. Her furious hatred was so strong that it drove her to do reckless and even "unhinged" actions, risking all her achievements to finally get some kind of vengeance.[1] To some degree, Yueya hoped that destroying Jasmine Island would finally prove to the world that she and her family were not just disgraced nobodies, but could wield true power. To this end, she was willing to massacre an entire people.[1][2]

Abilities

Yueya was a powerful firebender, specializing in generating fire streams as well as targeting her opponents' weaknesses.[1]

Trivia

  • On pages 22 and 52 of Uncle Iroh's Adventure Guide, Yueya is falsely titled as a "general".[2][8]
  • On page 90 of Uncle Iroh's Adventure Guide, Yueya is termed Erchtei's "great-grandchild".[9] However, this relation makes no chronological sense and is probably a mistake, as Yueya is usually described as his distant descendant.[1][3][2]
