Personal life

Llanas graduated in 1996 from Lake Forest Academy, a private boarding school in Chicago, Illinois, where he first developed his interest in becoming a writer. He later graduated from Macalester College, Minnesota, with a degree in Spanish literature and a minor in English. Committing himself to becoming a writer, he began working odd jobs to pay the bills while submitting his work. Llanas' big break came when his submission for the local Fringe Festival, Kung Fu Hamlet, received rave reviews, and he decided to attend the University of Southern California to pursue a screenwriting degree.

Llanas lives in California with his wife and daughter. He has three sisters, one brother, and three stepsisters.[2]

Career

Llanas began his career in 2007 on the short film Marwa, which was followed a year later working as writer and producer on the film East L.A.. That same year, he also began working on the medical drama Private Practice as part of the production staff, and would later return to the series as a story editor and writer for seasons five and six. In 2011, Llanas wrote one episode of the ABC drama Off the Map, before joining the writing staff of Grey's Anatomy in 2013 as both a story editor and writer across the ninth and tenth seasons. In 2016, he was a writer and producer on the crime series Second Chance and later joined the staff for the CW series Supergirl, writing a total of fourteen episodes over a three year stint. In 2020, Llanas was co-executive producer and writer on Party of Five, roles he also held on the Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History, which ran from 2022 to 2023.
