History
The Earthen Fire Industries was founded by Loban, a businessman from the Fire Nation, and Lao Beifong, an upper-class citizen from the Earth Kingdom, in the Hundred Year War's aftermath. It was the world's first international business venture.[2] The company mostly operated in Cranefish Town, where its first facility, the Earthen Fire Refinery, was located.[3][4] Though initially very successful, the company experienced its first near-disaster when Loban began mining ore without Lao Beifong's knowledge, drawing the ire of General Old Iron and almost leading to the destruction of the Earthen Fire Refinery, and with it, the company.[5][6] After this incident was resolved by Team Avatar, Loban largely retired, leaving Lao and his nephew Satoru as the main figures at the company.[7]
Earthen Fire Industries subsequently recovered, improved its technology under Satoru's direction, and expanded into other nations, such as the Southern Water Tribe, where it supported the Southern Reconstruction Project and helped to extract local oil reserves.[1] Its expansion was aided by its public association with Toph Beifong who began to act as the company's representative.[4] Domestically, as Cranefish Town began to grow in size and prosperity, Lao represented Earthen Fire Industries at an informal council alongside other local businesses, working together to oversee the settlement's development.[3]

However, Earthen Fire Industries' ventures remained troubled. At the South Pole, the company was drawn into a local nationalist uprising, greatly slowing down its production as most foreign employees had to leave the area.[1][8] In Cranefish Town, disputes erupted due to the increasing effectiveness of Earthen Fire Industries' production line, which relied on machinery instead of benders. Many bending employees quit their jobs, and Earthen Fire Industries' facilities were sabotaged during Liling's Bending Supremacist Uprising.[3][9][10] At some point after this conflict, bending supremacists kidnapped a group of Beifong Metalbending Academy students, intending to extort Earthen Fire Industries.[11]

At first, Earthen Fire Industries hired a group of earthbenders to patrol the Earthen Fire Refinery[2] and the Rough Rhinos as the personal security detail of Lao Beifong and Loban.[5] However, the earthbenders and Rough Rhinos quit in protest alongside other bender employees after the Earthen Fire Refinery improved its mechanical production line to such a degree that the bender-powered production line was no longer necessary. Afterwards, Lao hired a unit of professional nonbending guards led by a captain who gradually transformed into a kind of police for Cranefish Town.[3]
