Lao Yiu, derisively known as "Old Greasy", was the owner of the largest gambling den in the Lower Ring. He was considered very shrewd and greedy, to the point that Lower Ring residents claimed he would sell out his own mother for a good enough price.[1]
History
Mr. Wen regularly frequented Lao Yiu's gambling den during the Hundred Year War, accruing an immense debt and forcing him to put up ownership of his family's bakery as collateral, even though the latter was factually owned and run by his female relations. Eventually, Lao Yiu sent a debt collector, Officer Xiang, to collect on this debt, attempting to take ownership of Wen Bakery. Mr. Wen responded by assaulting Xiang, further worsening his family's situation.[2]
The parties eventually agreed to a mediation by Sumi the "Judge"; in course of the negotiations, Lao Yiu was shocked and impressed by the demeanor of Mr. Wen's daughter, Suyin Wen, who passionately and fiercely pleaded for her family's cause as well as angrily rejected her father as a useless drunk. To pay the family debt, Lao Yiu concluded that Suyin could work a "special assignment" in the Upper Ring,[1][3] while her father would become a security at the gambling den.[4] These conditions were agreed upon by the parties, whereupon Lao Yiu dropped his claim on the Wen Bakery.[1]
Physical description
Lao Yiu had thinning hair, which he kept slicked back with shiny oil, and a thin, drooping mustache.[1]
Trivia
- Based on an alternative rendering of his nickname, "Old Greasy", "Lao Yiu" can be written as "่ๆฒน
(Lวo Yรณu)", meaning "old" and "oil", respectively.[1] - According to Sumi, he was difficult to persuade.[3]
- Though he recommended Suyin for a "special assignment" as a Cultural Ambassador, it remained unclear whether he was fully aware of what this entailed.[3]
