History
In the late Hundred Year War, a group of armed men led by Yuze adopted the team name "Viper-Bats" and began to work as bounty hunters. Among their colleagues, they had a mixed reputation due to being ruthless yet not especially skilled. At one point, the group encountered the famous bounty hunter June. After 100 AG, however, bounty hunting became increasingly difficult as the Earth Kingdom government tried to curtail non-state vigilantism. Yuze and his followers opted to drop the "Viper-Bats" moniker and instead join the service of the Earth Kingdom military, catching other bounty hunters for money. This decision further worsened their reputation.[1]
In the late 100s AG, the group ambushed June near Ba Sing Se, just after she had kidnapped Iroh. Before the group could surprise her, however, they were noticed by Nyla and thus revealed themselves. Unfazed, June asked Yuze what he wanted and explained the group's background to a confused Iroh. Yuze mockingly feigned hurt feelings when June described his team as "a bunch of weaselly traitors"; another mercenary was more upset, and tried to argue that they were just trying to get by. Yuze then offered June to join his team, but when she refused he ordered his men to attack.[1]

A small battle erupted, with June initially gaining to upper hand. However, one mercenary managed to catch and incapacitate her, whereupon Nyla and Iroh intervened in the fight. When the firebender used his famous breath of fire, the mercenaries were shocked. Yuze exclaimed that no pay was not worth a fight against such a powerful bender, whereupon he and his comrades fled in disarray.[1]
Equipment
After joining the Earth Kingdom Army, Yuze's mercenaries started to wear patchy uniforms and armor. Yuze wielded a polearm in battle, whereas his comrades relied on knives, a sword, and their bare fists respectively.[1]
