The islands are notable for hosting the Southern Air Temple.

History

At some point after Avatar Wan closed the spirit portals, the Air Nomads built the Southern Air Temple in the Southern Archipelago's Patola Mountain Range. They also established a presence on several other islands.[2]

In 66 BG, Avatar Roku was training airbending at the Southern Air Temple. He was eventually visited by Ta Min; as her stay neared its end after a week, the Avatar and the noblewoman flew Disha's flying bison Amra to the foot of the air temple, and then walked to a nearby village to buy provisions for Ta Min's return trip to the Fire Nation. On the way, the two were ambushed by an earthbending agent, but saved by the timely intervention of Gyatso.[3][4]

The archipelago's airbender population was wiped out by the Fire Nation in the Air Nomad Genocide of 0 AG. However, several islands remained settled or were resettled[5][6] by people from other nations.[6] The Fire Nation military remained in the area for the rest of the Hundred Year War, occupying some islands,[7] patrolled the land around the Southern Air Temple,[8] and raided the archipelago's non-Fire Nation inhabitants.[6]

By 99 AG, some local communities banded together and hired a martial arts master to train them in combat to resist the Fire Nation.[6] Not long after, the islands were visited by Team Avatar, who explored the Southern Air Temple.[6][9]

After the Hundred Year War, the Southern Air Temple was rebuilt and resettled by the Air Acolytes and the new Air Nation.[10]

Trivia

  • According to the manga The Last Airbender Prequel: Zuko's Story, a Fire Nation colony was established in the Southern Archipelago during the Hundred Year War. However, the status of Zuko's Story regarding the series' canon is dubious.
