Ayunerak, sometimes known by the codename Mama, was a very high-ranking member of the Order of the White Lotus during the early era of Yangchen.[2] Publicly, Ayunerak ran a food kitchen for the unemployed of Bin-Er.[3]
History
Ayunerak was originally from the Northern Water Tribe. At some point, she joined the Order of the White Lotus, and became a very high-ranking member of the Order.[1] She read White Lotus reports from the Western Air Temple during the childhood of Avatar Yangchen, and learned about the young Avatar's extremely intense memories of her past lives.[1]
Long before the beginning of the shang system, Ayunerak established a shelter and food kitchen within the Inner Corridor of Bin-Er - the city's future International Quarter - that provided meals to the unemployed workers of the city. She also became acquainted with Tayagum, who was once one of Chief Oyaluk's most trusted warriors.[4] She later watched Bin-Er double in size due to mass migration to the shang cities, continuing to maintain the customs the customs of Water Tribe hospitality during that time.[3]
By year 17 of the era of Yangchen, Ayunerak had gotten to know Kavik, a young man who lived in the Water Tribe Quarter, with the two of them having previously talked about Kavik's breakup with an individual named Meihua.[4] Ayunerak also read reports about Yangchen's actions as a fully-realized Avatar; she came to see the younger woman as amateurish, believing she did too many things herself during an operation and expected results too quickly.[1]
One day, Ayunerak opened the door to Kavik, noticing a dopey grin on his face. Much to her surprise, Kavik gave her a large amount of money as a donation to her shelter, before telling her to visit her 'cousins' in Port Tuugaq. He gave her a nuzzle on the cheek before running back around the corner.[3] Ayunerak did go to Port Tuugaq soon after receiving Kavik's money, as she had heard reports from the White Lotus of bright lights and loud noises along the tundra around the city.[1]
Some time after her arrival in Port Tuugaq, Ayunerak learned from a junior member of the White Lotus that Yangchen had come to the city and sought out the aid of the secret society, having subdued three men who had tried to apprehend her and taken their bodies to a White Lotus safehouse, where she recited the secret society's recognition codes. Ayunerak found and woke the young Avatar, before telling her what had happened and introducing herself as "Mama".
After handing Yangchen meatless soup, Ayunerak explained that the paths of the White Lotus and Avatar normally only intertwined during moments of generational import, not because someone needed to stash a few bodies. She knew that Yangchen had gotten the recognition codes through one of her past lives, and told her that the White Lotus deemed the young Avatar far too proactive. However, Yangchen deduced that Ayunerak was investigating something, as she was high-ranking and was from the North, not the South, offering an information trade. Ayunerak was exasperated, telling her to think about what kind of Avatar she wanted to be, as she could inspire people with the truth rather than make use of spying, intelligence, and deception, especially when she had the gift of knowledge and wisdom at her fingertips.
Yangchen was shocked how Ayunerak could know that, and Ayunerak realized she had made a mistake by letting on that the White Lotus had someone inside the Western Air Temple, with Yangchen sternly reminding her that it had been her home. Ayunerak flatly apologized, and Yangchen told her that she had tried to speak with past Avatars, and most of them regretted that they had not acted sooner than they did. Ayunerak proceeded to tell Yangchen for her reason for coming to Port Tuugaq; while Yangchen was unimpressed hearing about lights and noise, she did tell the woman everything she knew about the Unanimity project, the shangs' secret plan to use a weapon of mass destruction to break free of the heads of state of the Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Water Tribes.[1] Ayunerak absorbed the information, but told the Avatar that she had not seen any records of the Sunbeam, the ship the Avatar was supposedly looking for. Realizing she had been too dismissive, Yangchen asked Ayunerak to see the site of the spiritual disturbances.[5]
Ayunerak waved at a pair of gate guards, having enough influence to easily walk out of Port Tuugaq late at night with a guest in tow. When they were far enough away, Yangchen whistled for her bison Nujian, and they flew further inland, reaching a large hill on the island. Yangchen sensed no spirits, but Ayunerak pointed out a series of strangely regular and spaced-out depressions in the landscape. Yangchen entered the Avatar State to rapidly clear all the snow from the landscape so that she and Ayunerak could better investigate. While Yangchen investigated up close, Ayunerak took notice of the glittering rocks that placed a grid. While the depressions looked like they were far beyond the abilities of the war machines of the four nations or regular bending, Ayunerak deduced that the area was a target range.[5] Yangchen soon left Port Tuugaq, concluding that her source had been wrong about the Sunbeam.[6]
Ayunerak returned to Bin-Er some time later, with Yangchen having apprehended all members of Unanimity, the first combustionbenders in recorded history. Afterward, Ayunerak took down a Thin Claw who was tailing Kavik, taking him out with an unseen weapon in her parka. She scouted through his pockets, explaining who he was to Kavik, before warning the young man that his involvement in Unanimity and its secrets was uncomfortably close to reaching the light of day. Kavik was confused how she could know this, but Ayunerak stated it was her job to know a great deal of many things, and that it was high time he joined her and her "friends".[2]
Six months after Kavik's betrayal of Yangchen causing both to separate, Ayunerak helped to hide and train Kavik within a secret basement beneath Gidu Shrine upon him now becoming a member of the White Lotus. The two of them were visited by Do, a fellow White Lotus member with whom Kavik was on unfriendly terms. After using his bending to trip Do on the stairs, Kavik watched him speak to Ayunerak, who declared afterward that she was taking Kavik back to the North Pole, before warning him that he was still a wanted man.[7]
Prior to leaving for Agna Qel'a, Kavik and Ayunerak discussed the possibility that Yangchen was holding the combustionbenders at the Northern Air Temple, Ayunerak pointed out that the Avatar had the most control and influence within Air Nomad territory, and the northern temple was the closest one to Bin-Er. Kavik suggested she could be keeping them at the Western Air Temple, where she had grown up, but Ayunerak admitted to letting slip to Yangchen that the White Lotus had a source of information there, making it unlikely she would want to make use of it as a hiding place. Kavik asked if Yangchen could have had the combustionbenders killed, but Ayunerak replied that the Avatar would not squander her assets in such a way, while also claiming that punishment and retribution were for amateurs.[8]
Through Ayunerak's White Lotus connections, Kavik parents were also able to depart Bin-Er to Long Stretch. Upon arrival to Agnea Qel'a, Ayunerak and Kavik were forced to infiltrate the northern capital through an underwater tunnel within the ice walls surrounding the city, using an umiak and their waterbending as a submersible. Ayunerak briefly struggled to keep the umiak steady, but Kavik was able to get them into the tunnel safely, and the pair of them entered a cavern built into the ice walls. There they were met by Ivalu, another White Lotus member, who informed them that Yangchen had met with Oyaluk earlier, but had disappeared from the city a day ago after heading to the Spirit Oasis. Fearing that the Avatar had been lost to the Spirit World, Ayunerak, Kavik and Ivalu raced there, the former two arriving just in time to witness Yangchen return whilst entwined with part of the Fog of Lost Souls.[7]
Upon Kavik freeing Yangchen with his waterbending, Ayunerak met with both of them in a safehouse near one of the city's branch canals. With neither Kavik and Yangchen at first wanting to speak to one another after Kavik's betrayal, Ayunerak denied Yangchen's claim of the White Lotus leaking information about Unanimity to the Earth King upon Yangchen noticing Feishan's mobilization of troops in preparation of war as if he was fearful of it.[9] After Ayunerak's explanation to Yangchen, the Avatar coldly thanked them for saving her life, before announcing her intention to leave to try and find a solution to the problems caused by Unanimity, insinuating that Kavik was responsible for most of them.
Ayunerak insisted however that Yangchen should take Kavik back as one of her companions upon offering a trade: In return for one of their own being allowed to travel alongside Yangchen, the White Lotus would help her fulfill her goal of bringing an end to the Platinum Affair and the strife it had caused across the four nations. Yangchen retorted that ending the Platinum Affair was no longer her goal, and that right now she would be lucky to have a collection of ruined and divided cities left over once things came to an end. Ayunerak insisted that their two factions could still work together to ensure peace, but Yangchen was skeptical, having come to believe that the White Lotus's influence on the world leaders had set the events of the Platinum Affair in motion.[9]
After Yangchen and Kavik had a brief conversation which was privately requested by Kavik upon Ayunerak's methods not working, Ayunerak re-entered the hideout, having narrowly avoided a guard patrol. She insisted that Yangchen needed the influence of the White Lotus to mediate the brewing conflict, before revealing that she did not have a means of extracting Kavik from Agna Qel'a, forcing the Avatar to smuggle him out herself in order to keep him and his knowledge about Unanimity from falling into Oyaluk's grasp. Kavik and Yangchen realized that Ayunerak had deliberately arranged things this way to make sure the former two would leave Agna Qel'a together.[9]
Ayunerak met with Kavik and Do following the death Nujian upon coming to Taku with the approach of the convocation's end. Kavik reported the events of the island surrounding Unanimity's experimentation to the pair, withholding about Hsien upon not wanting her to continue being treated as an asset. After listening to Kavik's report, Do berated him and Yangchen for allowing the only known Unanimity firebender besides Thapa to die, prompting Kavik to express disgust at how he saw Raitei as no more than an asset of strategic value. Ayunerak claimed Raitei's fate was indeed a tragedy, but nevertheless stated that he could have been swayed to the cause of the White Lotus and aided in mastering his ability if he were still alive. Incredulous that Ayunerak would speak of utilizing combustionbending despite being told of the cruelties involved in its development, Kavik asked whether she was trying to stop or control Unanimity. Ayunerak replied that she wanted to do both, claiming the world was best controlled by a neutral party, and the White Lotus was the faction best suited for this.[10]
Upon learning from Do that Thapa could not be found by the White Lotus, Kavik asked about Feishan, Ayunerak replied that Chaisee had so far allowed him to roam Taku unmolested, and would no doubt continue to do so until Oyaluk and Gonryu arrived in the city for the end of the convocation, since having the three national leaders together gathered together would allow her to make the best possible use of Thapa. Kavik asked about Kalyaan, which Ayunerak said that the White Lotus had been unable to find him as well. With the meeting ending, Ayunerak asked Kavik how Yangchen was holding up, a question he considered unfair given the recent loss of Nujian.[10]
Following the events in Taku and Unanimity defeated, Ayunerak met with Kavik and Yangchen within the Agna Qel'a safehouse where they had all met previously, with Kavik serving as the lookout as Yangchen explained the events in Taku to the older woman. During the discussion, Ayunerak learned Yangchen had essentially taken control of all the shang cities and made Chaisee dependent on her, with the latter step effectively granting her access to the former zongdu's still extensive resources. After Ayunerak questioned Yangchen's willingness to allow Chaisee's deeds to go unpunished, Kavik reminded the Executor of her previous claim that retribution was for amateurs.[11]
