Honu was a waterbender who grew up in a Fire Nation prison camp during the Hundred Year War. After the war was over, she ended up working for the Southern Water Tribe pirate Gayu, after she refused to let the sexist traditions of her tribe impede her.[1]

History

Honu grew up in a waterbender prison camp after developing bending at a young age and being caught in a Fire Nation raid. After the war, she returned to her village, hoping to become a warrior, but was turned away from training because she was a woman.

Refusing to let tradition stop her, Honu set out to find someone to train her and met Gayu from the Southern Water Tribe. Gayu was a warrior and pirate who was strong and independent, and everything Honu strove to be. Working for pirates was not her dream profession, but the war had taught her that life was messy, and that perhaps it had no true heroes. When Gayu's son Kahola decided to strike out on his own, Honu pledged to his mother to follow and protect him.[1]

Personality

Honu was a quiet and cautious person. She considered the sexist traditions of her tribe to be "silly" and refused to let them constrain her, and although she did not believe that working for pirates was ideal, the war had taught her that life was messy and that it perhaps had no true heroes.[1]

Abilities

Honu often used floating shards of ice when she had to fight others with waterbending.[1]

Notes

  1. โ†‘ Though Honu's home tribe is not directly stated, she was turned away as a warrior over being a woman after the end of the Hundred Year War,[1] the Northern Water Tribe is the only Water Tribe known to refuse women as warriors by that time period.[2]
