Akataa was the leader of Jasmine Island's protectors during the late Hundred Year War. They played a major role in defending the island's people from the Fire Nation military during "The Devastation".
History
Akataa joined the protectors' ranks at an early point in their life and trained in accordance to the group's traditions.[2] Over the course of the Hundred Year War, however, it had become normal for Jasmine Island protectors to ultimately leave their home to fight as volunteers against the Fire Nation.[2][3] As a result, Akataa's older trainers also left, passing the responsibility of training and commanding the remaining, younger protectors to Akataa.[2]
Over time, Akataa became one of the most experienced warriors on the island.[1] They took their leadership role seriously, yet often struggled to assert themselves due to still regarding themselves as rather inexperienced.[2] Akataa faced a true test of their abilities when a strong Fire Nation force led by Admiral Yueya attacked Jasmine Island, launching a murderous campaign later dubbed "The Devastation". After the initial surprise attacks led by Captain Zhao, the surviving protectors of the island rallied around Akataa, and tried to fight off the invaders.[1] Together with their comrades Aiko, Basalt, Siku, and Fu Meili,[1][3] Akataa later encountered Fire Nation soldiers led by Captain Lu Ten, who actually opposed the slaughter. The protectors allied with Lu Ten,[4][5] and together worked out a plan to stop Yueya.[4][6] This culminated in a battle where Akataa and their friends defeated the admiral, helping to save their home.[4][7]
Personality
Akataa was a warm and friendly person, making it occasionally difficult for them to make hard and assertive choices as a leader. When they overcame their doubts, however, Akataa was an inspiring and diplomatic person who was well suited to bear both the burdens as well as triumphs of leadership.[2]
Abilities
Besides their substantial leadership talent, Akataa was also a highly skilled nonbending martial artist. Their fighting style was based on Jasmine Island's traditional combat techniques and consisted of dance- or flow-like strikes and parries using a staff with weighted baskets on either end.[2]
