History

Aera was born on Karr Lok Island of the Fire Nation. She was raised by her grandmother and lacked her left arm. Aera attended the island's school, Sunray Academy, where she made three friends: Adaki, Sujun, and Jiyung.[1][2] She enjoyed teasing her friends, often surprising them by sneaking up on them.[1]

One day after meditation class at Sunray Academy, Aera overheard Adaki telling Sujun and Jiyung about being surprised by a small animal during a fishing tour with his father. Stealthily approaching the three, her sudden appearance scared Adaki; she smiled and apologized. However, the group's talk was subsequently interrupted by another student who declared that a fight between students was taking place at one of the school's training rooms.[1]

Aera was shocked when Adaki volunteered his group for the tournament.

Once Aera and the others arrived at the training room, the friends witnessed a group of sixteen-year-old students easily defeating a group of six graders. Aera was a bit impressed by the older students' skill in firebending. After the match, the students were surprised when Chuan, the top firebending teacher of their school, appeared on the stage to declare that they were still seeking fifth graders for a youth team to enter the regional bending tournament. She offered to train any fifth graders who enlisted, despite her students usually being fourteen at the youngest. Aera expressed skepticism at the teacher's proposal, murmuring that Chuan was probably just trying to enlist some youngsters to "fill spaces". Much to Aera's shock, however, Adaki suddenly declared that he and his friends would sign up.[1]

After the next class, the group got a lunch break during which Adaki attempted to convince his friends to actually sign up for the tournament. Whereas Jiyung and Sujun were very doubtful about the idea, Aera noted that it "could be fun".[2]
